Jhumlawang Village Foundation (JVF) is a community-based, non-profit, non-governmental organization established by community members and diaspora members of the village in 2009. The mission of the foundation is to set an example of how members of the community, diaspora members, friends, and well-wishers of the village can work together on the sustainable development of “one village” to inspire other communities in Nepal and the world. It is located in Ward 3, Bhume Rural Municipality-3, Rukum (East), Nepal. The altitude ranges from 1500 to 3350 meters above sea level.
Jhumlawang and neighboring villages practice a traditional organic farming system, but the food production from the farmlands is not enough for a year, and is prone to natural calamities (drought, hailstorm, high wind, and untimely heavy rainfall). Therefore, JVF has been promoting good local AE practices as well as introducing climate-resilient main crops, multi-use, perennial vegetables, and diversification of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. JVF does participatory varietal trials on main crops to increase production, and also works on protecting local seeds.
JVF is working to develop Jhumlawang as an Agroecology Village, so that people from around the world can visit, learn/share/teach, and experience the various components of agroecology principles at the community level in one village. JVF has been fortunate to work with like-minded individuals, organisations, and institutions. Local government (Bhume Rural Municipality, Ward- 2 and 3) and Fastenaktion are two partners who have been continuously supporting our dream.
