Laboratório Vivo Ocupação Verde Capim Limão: A Hub for Education and Agroecology

The Laboratório Vivo Ocupação Verde Capim Limão is an Extension Project of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) that focuses on topics such as Food Systems, Agroecology, Food Sovereignty, Ecology, and Agroforestry. It serves as an educational platform to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical applications, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable living.

Founded in 2006 by undergraduate students from the UFRJ Institute of Biology, the Capim Limão Project emerged as a grassroots initiative aimed at studying, practicing, and teaching themes related to Agroecology. Core areas of focus include biodiversity, environmental health, urban family farming, and sustainable practices, with an emphasis on food sovereignty. By integrating these topics, the project promotes dialogue between traditional knowledge, cultural practices, societal needs, and academic research, creating a fertile ground for transformative education.

Central to the project’s mission is the appreciation of rural and campesino ways of life through activities that foster collaboration between family farmers, the university, and the broader community. These initiatives aim to build bridges between producers and consumers, encouraging critical reflection about the origins and production processes of food. By engaging directly with the realities of small-scale farming, participants gain insights into sustainable practices while supporting ethical food systems.

Environmental education plays a vital role in the Capim Limão Project, with workshops and discussions designed to spark reflection and debate. Through accessible and engaging teaching methods, the project creates spaces for learning that transcend classroom walls. These educational activities not only empower students with knowledge but also inspire the broader community to take an active role in advancing agroecology, sustainability, and ecological consciousness.

This living laboratory is more than a space for learning; it is a dynamic platform for action, collaboration, and transformation, embodying the values of agroecology and education for a more sustainable and equitable world.

Quel est votre rêve pour l'avenir de votre ferme et/ou de votre site en général?

The Capim Limão Project dreams of a future where agroecology becomes a guiding principle for how societies grow, share, and consume food. This vision includes creating resilient food systems rooted in local knowledge, biodiversity, and solidarity. The project aspires to expand its educational reach, inspiring more individuals, especially students, to actively engage in sustainable practices and to champion agroecological principles in their own communities. By fostering a stronger connection between academia, rural farmers, and urban dwellers, the initiative envisions a world where food production is aligned with ecological balance and social justice.

Another dream of the Capim Limão team is to see their work serve as a model for other universities and communities, both in Brazil and worldwide. They aim to build a growing network of living laboratories where traditional wisdom and scientific research work hand in hand to address environmental and social challenges. The dream extends beyond teaching methods to a broader cultural shift, where people deeply value the origins of their food and the farmers who produce it. By amplifying their efforts in education, collaboration, and advocacy, the project seeks to create lasting change that nourishes not only the planet but also the minds and hearts of those who participate in this movement.
