Himalaya Agroecology Research & Development

Nepal

Short description of your place and practices

Himalaya Agroecology Research & Development is a community-rooted initiative based in the Himalayan region of Nepal, dedicated to strengthening resilient food systems through agroecology. We work alongside local farmers, women’s groups, and mountain communities to co-create knowledge, restore soil health, and cultivate diverse, climate-adapted crops. Our approach integrates traditional ecological wisdom with regenerative agriculture techniques, including agroforestry, seed conservation, composting, and low-input organic cultivation.

Our work also focuses on building local capacity and livelihoods by supporting community-based enterprises in food processing, herbal products, and value-added agricultural goods. Through training, hands-on demonstration fields, and collaborative design of land use systems, we aim to empower households and villages to improve food security, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen social resilience. By connecting villages across the Himalayan landscape, we help cultivate a shared pathway toward ecological balance and community well-being.

What is your dream for the future of your farm and/or your location in general?

Our dream is to see Himalayan communities flourish through regenerative land stewardship, where agriculture not only nourishes people but also protects forests, water, and biodiversity. We envision a landscape where young people, women, and smallholder farmers lead thriving local economies rooted in cooperation, dignity, and ecological balance. In the long term, we aspire to become a model for mountain agroecology that inspires other regions of the world to embrace community-based resilience, cultural knowledge, and sustainable food systems.
