Located in Mbodiene, Senegal, Taaru Askan Farm cultivates organic fruits and vegetables while offering training rooted in permaculture and agroecology principles. What began as a modest dream in 2010 on a three-hectare piece of bushland has grown into a thriving farm. Initially, the land was scattered with Baobab and Acacia stubs, and the first step was to protect the trees, establish a water source, and build a small structure for weekend retreats away from Dakar. The early days were humble, with nights spent in a tent under the stars, where dreams of regeneration and cultivation took shape. Water proved to be the most significant challenge, but perseverance led to the drilling of a 97-meter borehole, providing a consistent supply of sweet water. This milestone allowed the fruit trees to thrive and a small vegetable garden to flourish, guided by a philosophy of planting three fruit trees for every one cut down, focusing on reviving traditional Senegalese fruits.
The farm's commitment to organic practices grew out of concerns over widespread pesticide use in Senegal. Insights from a visiting expert revealed alarming practices, such as mixing multiple insecticides and harvesting crops shortly after spraying. Recognizing the need for healthier alternatives, Taaru Askan began producing organic vegetables like kale, rainbow Swiss chard, fennel, and bok choy. These crops were sold at the Dakar Organic Farmer's Market, offering locals fresh produce that was previously available only in luxury supermarkets at exorbitant prices. This success not only created a niche for the farm but also addressed a growing public demand for pesticide-free food.
As the demand for their organic produce outpaced supply, Taaru Askan Farm expanded by hiring and training agricultural students and technicians. However, the transition to sustainable practices proved challenging, as conventional methods dominated the local education system. Many staff members initially struggled with the farm’s labor-intensive and chemical-free philosophy, but a dedicated core team emerged. With the support of this passionate group and international volunteers, the farm transformed into a flourishing enterprise and a hub for innovation in organic agriculture.
Today, Taaru Askan Farm’s impact extends beyond cultivation. The farm develops training programs in regenerative agriculture and collaborates with communities in the Casamance and Sine Saloum Delta on tree-planting initiatives and economic development projects. Grateful for the journey and the collective efforts that have made the farm’s vision a reality, Taaru Askan continues to dream boldly. They invite others to join their mission of creating something larger than themselves, fostering sustainable practices, and preserving Senegal’s natural heritage.
