Nestled within the Plum Village mindfulness practice centres in the French countryside, The Happy Farm is far more than an agricultural project; it is a living embodiment of Engaged Buddhism. As an agroecology initiative, it seamlessly incorporates regenerative and organic practices into the daily rhythm of monastic and community life. Located in the hamlets of our practice centres, these farms provide a sacred space where volunteers and retreatants can experience, first-hand, the profound interconnection between the earth, rain, sun, and seed, and the mindful hand of the farmer. Here, cultivating the soil becomes a direct meditation on our interdependence with all life.
Our farming methods at Upper Hamlet, Lower Hamlet, and New Hamlet are carefully chosen to honor this principle. We employ a variety of regenerative and organic techniques—from composting and biodiversity preservation to vegan cultivation—that heal the land rather than deplete it. Central to this work is the practice of mindfulness. Our volunteer teams move and work with awareness, turning every task into a practice of presence. This mindful labour is the heart of our vision, which seeks to nurture wellbeing simultaneously on three levels: for the individual practitioner, for the community society, and for the Earth itself.
Ultimately, The Happy Farm offers a tangible blueprint for a harmonious future. It demonstrates that a spiritual path and ecological stewardship are one and the same. By connecting the hand to the soil and the food to our table with conscious awareness, we cultivate not only nourishing vegetables but also peace, joy, and a deep sense of responsibility. We invite all who visit to witness this practical Dharma, learning how caring for a single seed is, in essence, an act of caring for our shared world.

The ultimate goal and dream of The Happy Farm is to cultivate a tangible model of healing—for the individual, the community, and the planet. We dream of a world where agriculture is no longer an act of extraction, but one of compassionate reciprocity, where tending the soil becomes a daily meditation on interconnectedness. Our aspiration is to demonstrate that regenerative farming and deep mindfulness are inseparable, growing not just organic food, but also resilience, joy, and collective awakening. By sowing seeds of mindful awareness alongside seeds of life in our gardens, we work toward a future where every meal is a reminder of our peaceful bond with the Earth, inspiring a global shift toward conscious and sustainable living.
