Short description of your place and practices

The Terra Viva Brasil Institute of Agroecology is a non-profit civil association dedicated to public interest, headquartered in Sorocaba and active in the surrounding municipalities. Its core mission is to strengthen family farming through the lens of Agroecology, promoting a truly sustainable rural development model. This paradigm not only fosters environmentally sound agricultural practices but also serves as a foundational element for building a society rooted in sustainable social, environmental, cultural, political, ethical, and economic relationships.

Terra Viva Agroecology is powered by a multidisciplinary team of professionals with technical, undergraduate, and postgraduate expertise across biological, environmental, agronomic/agroecological, social, and economic fields. This diverse knowledge base enhances their capacity to engage in technical, social, and community projects, as well as regional research initiatives. Their activities span Technical Assistance and Rural Extension, consultancy, workshops, courses, and participation in municipal, regional, and state councils and forums. A notable achievement was the "PLANTING WATERS" project (2013-2015), coordinated in partnership with Iniciativa Verde NGO and sponsored by Petrobras Ambiental. This project promoted Agroforestry Systems for over 80 farming families, improved water management through sanitation and rainwater harvesting systems, and provided educational activities, significantly boosting local agroecological production.

Crucially, Terra Viva Agroecology operates within a network of regional partnerships, reinforcing the collective strength of institutions committed to rural development and Agroecology. It actively contributes to the "Sorocabana Agroecology Network," collaborating with farmer groups, the UFSCar Sorocaba Agroecology Center, ITESP, and others. Additionally, participation in the "Regional Forum of Family Farming" fosters connections with cooperatives, municipalities, and rural unions. Through initiatives like the GARFOS group and the Sorocaba Environmental Department, Terra Viva helped establish the city's first exclusively organic market in 2013, paving the way for broader organic commerce. This momentum led to the creation of the Agroecological and Organic Producers Cooperative of Sorocabana Region (COOPAORGS) in 2016. Currently, the "Terra Viva Warehouse Project" supports the distribution of COOPAORGS' organic and agroecological products, enhancing the availability of healthy, affordable food, promoting fair trade, and strengthening the vital connection between rural producers and urban communities.
